Citrus Crusher is a very user-friendly plugin with a lot happening on the back end but with only a few knobs and buttons for the user. It aims to “degrade” audio passing through in order to achieve a low quality, MP3 reduced bit size sound. We achieved this through a few techniques including bit-crushing, downsampling, over-compression, and spectral masking. The result is a lo-fi, gritty, and sparkling sound like something downloaded off LimeWire in the early 2000s.
I was the lead developer on this plugin and though I didn’t design the animation, I did create the animation which responds to amplitude levels and harmonic distortion caused by the spectral masking. Other audio FX include a simple SVF Lowpass/Highpass filter, and long allpass reverb which turned to the max never decays, and a Freeze function which will sample and repeat the first ~300 ms of incoming audio.
