Modular FX

The Colour FX system inside MNDLA includes over 90 audio effects designed within a modular panel. This suite features a comprehensive list of modules you’d expect in any modern DAW, along with custom-tailored ones inspired by guitar pedals, psychoacoustic phenomena, vintage analog gear, and modern digital synthesis techniques. Drawing from these diverse sources, I aimed to create a versatile and innovative toolkit for sound designers and musicians alike.

I was responsible for producing this extensive list of effects (around 75) now featured in the MNDLA engine. Using a variety of development programs, including Faust, HISE, C++, Javascript, RNBO and JUCE, I meticulously crafted each effect. I reduced the controls to three per effect, ensuring they mimic modular capabilities with modulatable features. My goal was to create a system that captures the tactile and immediate nature of hardware while harnessing the power and flexibility of software.

The goal was to make very intuitive FX with a lot of the processing being done on the backend, while maintaining low CPU so users can stack up to 12 of them in the modular, FX-panel. You can read more about this and more on my contributions to the MNDLA engine.Â
